What nyama choma is

Nyama choma — Swahili for "roasted meat" — is East Africa's grilled-meat tradition, usually goat, beef or chicken cooked over charcoal and served simply, often with little more than salt, a chilli-tomato relish called kachumbari, and ugali or rice on the side. At Nyama Choma Ranch the format is scaled up into a hotel buffet built around that same idea: meat grilled over an open flame rather than plated in a kitchen out of sight.

What's on the buffet

The venue's own description points to prime Kenyan steak, chicken and roasted mutton, "sizzling hot, presented on skewers and carved at your table," alongside jacket potatoes, crisp salads and dips. The emphasis is on the grill itself rather than a large spread of separate dishes — this is a meat-forward buffet built around one central idea, not a broad international spread.

Vegetarian and dietary notes

A vegetarian selection is offered alongside the grill, though at least one visitor's account from a vegetarian guest noted wishing for more Kenyan vegetarian dishes and a plant-based version of nyama choma specifically — worth knowing if vegetarian food is a priority rather than an afterthought for your evening. For a stricter vegan requirement, a genuine allergy, or a halal requirement not stated on the venue's own site, messaging GetYourGuide's support ahead of your date is the safer route, since a self-serve buffet isn't labelled dish by dish the way a plated restaurant menu would be.

Drinks and the bar

A fully stocked bar with cocktails and wines is on site, but drinks sit outside the ticket price — the buffet and the show are what's covered, and anything from the bar is an evening add-on to budget for separately. Late-night seating and outside seating are both offered, so there's flexibility in where you sit through the meal even before the tables fill for the show.

Eating with children

The buffet format tends to suit families well, since children can choose from a straightforward, familiar spread — grilled meat, potatoes, salad — rather than being locked into a set menu built for adult tastes. Combined with the drumming and dance that starts partway through dinner, there's usually enough happening around the table to hold younger guests' attention without needing a children's menu of its own.

What past diners say

One detailed Tripadvisor account from a visitor who specifically came for the Safari Cats show and dinner combination rated the night highly overall, crediting the performers even while noting the buffet's vegetarian options as its weaker point on that particular visit. Read a handful of longer, specific reviews rather than a star average alone if the food side of the evening matters as much to you as the show — a buffet's day-to-day range can vary more than a fixed show's running order does.
